Just Cut the strawberry: a quickie about getting the job done
This is a quick one yall.
But it's a message I know someone needs to hear.
Yesterday, I wanted some fruit. I had a few strawberries in the fridge, but when I looked at them, I didn't feel like eating them as whole pieces of fruit.
It sounds silly, but I was really about to put them back in the fridge because they just didn't look appetizing in their current state.
On my way back to the fridge, I thought to myself, "Tamisha, just cut the strawberry!" I laughed at myself because, at first, I resisted the thought. "I don't want to have to do all that."
And then I had to sit and realize how silly I was being. I wanted a thing. I had it in front of me. All I needed to do was cut it up to enjoy the treat.
And so I did. I cut the strawberries and enjoyed the treat.
So why tell you a story about my resistance to cutting up pieces of fruit? Because I know that resistance shows up in me when I execute tasks every day.
What would happen if we would all just cut the strawberry?
Take that important task, which will lead us toward our desired goal, and break it down into more manageable and appetizing tasks.
If you have an important goal in front of you and are feeling stuck when it comes to executing the tasks to get it done, try this:
Step 1: Make sure the goal still makes sense. Do you really want to do this thing?
Step 2: What's the first task you need to do to get you started?
Step 3: Break that task down into smaller tasks or micro-tasks. Micro-tasks lead to small wins, which build momentum.
Step 4: Check your resistance! Resistance is natural and not a sign that we should abandon what we're doing. Sometimes, we need to name the thing to release it. Name your feelings, and then give yourself a two-second pep talk.
Step 5: Do the first micro-task.
Step 6: Celebrate the taste of success and keep going!
Sometimes, we just need to cut the strawberry, make the task more appetizing, and sit back to enjoy the fruit of our labor.
If this resonates with you, let me know in the comments!
Until next time,
Take care and stay well!
Tamisha
